“fitting in never made anyone famous. Fitting in never made a thought leader. Fitting in does not make an effective influencer. Fitting in does not create a memorable brand. Fitting in means you're easily replaceable. And honestly, fitting in is not your truth.” – India Jackson

Changes in life, business, and society at large can greatly impact the way you show up as a brand. In this episode of the Flaunt Your Fire podcast, host and CEO India Jackson examines common ways people and brands respond to changes and crises.

Your brand visibility is dependent on your health, well-being, the health of your team, and your insistence on staying true to yourself and your values.

Listen in as India urges you to

  • question why you feel the urge to do what everyone else is doing in order to fit in,

  • ask whether any given choice will help or harm your brand and others,

  • protect the asset (that’s you!) by engaging in self-care that helps you thrive,

  • encourage your team members to care for themselves, too,

  • give yourself permission to press pause on anything that you’re resisting,

and more!

Ask yourself

[00:01:43] Do you need a reminder to be yourself, and what does that even mean to you? Write yourself that permission slip to do what feels right for you and your brand.

[00:03:33] Do you find yourself doing what everyone else is doing? For example, putting up a black square and otherwise being silent on social media. Ask yourself why you’re inclined to do something just because everyone else is doing it.

[00:06:52] When you jump on a bandwagon or follow somebody else’s blueprint, ask yourself whether doing so is true to you and your brand, and whether it will help or harm the cause you say you’re doing it for. Would something original from your own mind create more engagement and interest?

[00:10:00] What are you doing to “protect the asset?” As a leader and CEO, you need to care for yourself and make sure you’re able to function so you can do what you need to do.

[00:12:20] Are you giving your team members the space to care for themselves, too, in moments of stress and crisis? The whole team needs to be healthy in order for your organization to run well.

[00:15:20] When you’re feeling stressed and in crisis, are you giving yourself permission to press pause, take a step back, and reevaluate your well-being and visibility? Give yourself space to take the path of least resistance in difficult moments.

[00:20:15] If you decide to take a break from some of your brand visibility, are you pressuring yourself to come back by a specific date, or to put that energy into another aspect of your business? Don’t. Take that extra time to rest.

[00:24:06] What does resistance look like for you? And how can you get curious about why you’re resisting? Often it’s because something no longer feels aligned with our brand and values.

Quotes

“A large part of how I work with clients is encouraging them to fully be themselves in everything that they do. Unapologetically. That doesn't mean following somebody else's blueprint, not even mine. We're their visibility agency, and we're not even forcing them to follow ours to the T.” – India Jackson

“When we are not feeling good about ourselves… when we are not feeling like we are fully being our authentic self… when we are not showing up for ourselves in a way that feels good and true to who we are… when we are not being our greatest version, it is not going to feel good and exciting to be seen to be visible, to have other eyes looking at us and learning from us and taking us in.” – India Jackson

“It's okay to press pause, take a step back, and do one of my biggest visibility lessons, which is ask myself, “what is the path of least resistance right now? What does feel good? And how can I double down that?” And not necessarily worry so much about what doesn't feel good in this moment. I’m giving you permission to the same.” – India Jackson

“The fitting in, never made anyone famous. Fitting in never made a thought leader. Fitting in does not make an effective influencer. Fitting in does not create a memorable brand. Fitting in means you're easily replaceable. And honestly, fitting in is not your truth.” – India Jackson
